How to Activate Your Child’s Nervous System for a Great School Year

Our bodies aren’t made for sitting still. That’s one of the reasons why we love summer so much! Lots of time spent swimming, running, exploring, and playing is good for our bodies - and our brains.

Now that school is back in session, you can help your child be a better learner, simply by helping them activate their nervous system for a great school year.

How? Through motion!

Move Your Body

Movement is one way to keep the connection active between our bodies and brains. Kids can’t run around the classroom while the teacher is talking, but they can sit up straight, roll their shoulders, take a few deep breaths, and even nod their heads when taking in new information. Between classes or during breaks, they can also do some easy stretches.

Try Belly Breathing

Belly breathing is an excellent way to calm your mind and relax your nervous system for a better day at school. Plus, it’s an easy exercise to do in the classroom - or anywhere! Watch this video with Dr. Joe and Luna to learn more about how and why we recommend belly breathing.

See a Chiropractor

Our brains are our bodies’ command centers, and chiropractic care is an excellent way to maintain good health and keep signals flowing smoothly from our brains, through our nervous systems, and throughout our bodies. That means visiting a chiropractor is another good way to activate your nervous system for a great school year. Getting adjusted will help keep your nervous system “free and ready to fire and wire with your brain,” according to John Marc, with Discover Kids Health.
